In a notable shift within the aviation sector, Istanbul Airport has overtaken Heathrow Airport as Europe’s busiest hub, with passenger numbers in July reaching 8.15 million compared to Heathrow’s 7.86 million. This change comes amid a slight dip in Heathrow’s traffic, which fell by 1.5% compared to the same month last year, whereas Istanbul experienced a 2.3% increase in passenger numbers.
The decline at Heathrow has been partially attributed to travel disruptions caused by ongoing conflicts in the Middle East. This situation has intensified calls for the UK government to approve a much-debated third runway at Heathrow. Currently, the airport operates at near full capacity with its two runways. The proposed £33 billion expansion project aims to boost Heathrow’s capacity to accommodate approximately 150 million passengers annually, which is seen as crucial for enhancing the UK’s global connectivity, trade, and tourism.
Istanbul Airport, which commenced operations in 2018, benefits from a more expansive site and continuous, round-the-clock operations. It presently utilizes three runways, with plans to introduce a fourth runway by the end of 2026, further bolstering its ability to handle growing passenger numbers.
Meanwhile, other UK airports are also experiencing increased activity. London Stansted and Manchester airports both reported their busiest July on record, with passenger numbers reaching 3.1 million and 3.4 million, respectively. These figures highlight the ongoing demand for air travel in the UK despite the challenges faced by Heathrow.
